Olej silnikowy stale krąży po silniku, chłodząc go i oczyszczając z pozostałości spalonego paliwa. Aby przedłużyć okres użytkowania jednostki napędowej, stosuje się przykręcany do bloku silnika filtr oleju. Wyłapuje on drobiny sadzy i inne zanieczyszczenia zawarte w oleju. Pozostawienie starego filtru sprawi, że wcześniej wyłapane zanieczyszczenia przedostaną się do silnika wraz z nowym olejem. Pozorna oszczędność, czyli rezygnacja z wymiany filtru oleju, negatywnie wpływa na żywotność jednostki napędowej.
